Fire Station Personnel Best Practices

In Colorado, the Safe Haven law allows a parent to safely surrender their unharmed infant, who is three days old or younger, to a firefighter at a designated Safe Haven staffed fire station in Colorado.

  • Take temporary custody of the child
  • Perform any necessary act to protect, preserve, or aid the physical health and safety of the child
  • Allow the relinquishing parent to remain anonymous and leave without being pursued, provided that the infant shows no signs of abuse or neglect and is 72 hours old or younger
  • Have EMT or Paramedic perform a basic assessment of the infant’s condition
  • Notify dispatch and request an EMS transport or transport the infant to a local hospital
  • Have dispatch notify law enforcement
  • Notify a Chief Officer of the District
  • Record the incident on NFIRS/PCR
  • Turn over custody/care to EMS transport or receiving hospital
  • Contact the Colorado Department of Health and Human Services (CDHS) at TEL: 844-264-5437 (844-CO4KIDS) (24 hours)
