Fire Station Personnel Best Practices
In Colorado, the Safe Haven law allows a parent to safely surrender their unharmed infant, who is three days old or younger, to a firefighter at a designated Safe Haven staffed fire station in Colorado.
- Take temporary custody of the child
- Perform any necessary act to protect, preserve, or aid the physical health and safety of the child
- Allow the relinquishing parent to remain anonymous and leave without being pursued, provided that the infant shows no signs of abuse or neglect and is 72 hours old or younger
- Have EMT or Paramedic perform a basic assessment of the infant’s condition
- Notify dispatch and request an EMS transport or transport the infant to a local hospital
- Have dispatch notify law enforcement
- Notify a Chief Officer of the District
- Record the incident on NFIRS/PCR
- Turn over custody/care to EMS transport or receiving hospital

Hospital and Community Clinic Emergency Center Personnel Best Practices
In Colorado, the Safe Haven law allows a parent to safely surrender their unharmed infant, who is three days old or younger, to a staff member who engages in the admission, care, or treatment of patients at a hospital or community clinic emergency center.
Specific procedures may vary by hospital.
- Take temporary custody of the child
- Perform any necessary act to protect, preserve or aid the physical health and safety of the child
- Allow the relinquishing parent to remain anonymous and leave without being pursued provided that the infant shows no signs of abuse or neglect and is 72 hours old or younger
- Perform a basic assessment of the infant’s condition.
- Have lead notify law enforcement
- Contact the Colorado Department of Health and Human Services (CDHS) at TEL: 844-264-5437 (844-CO4KIDS) (24 hours)
